This week’s article features RPG Kickstarters that end between March 31st and April 28th. We have a double feature, an RPG app, three RPGs that come in VHS containers, some 5e content, an all-ages dark fantasy option, and the chance to ask an RPG creator a question and get the answer printed in a book.

Pericle: Gathering Darkness from Long Dog Games

  • END DATE: Fri, April 8 2022 9:58 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG app
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $1 to access the pledge manager
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This is a rarely executed take on roleplaying: You’re still at the gaming table, but you’re using your phone to watch cut scenes with in-app direction and combat options with something akin to a digital GM. Designed for up to four players, this game involves a standard tabletop RPG complete with pawns, paper character sheets, and more, but adds in digital elements that let you take GM-less roleplaying in a new direction. If you’re interested in a phone assisted roleplaying experience, check out the campaign page.

THEY CAME FROM THE CYCLOPS’S CAVE and [CLASSIFIED] from Onyx Path Publishing

  • END DATE: Thu, April 7 2022 2:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Storypath System
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebooks
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $105 + S/H for the PDF, POD, and hardcovers of the books plus the POD of the director’s cards for each RPG
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? They Came From… is Onyx Path Publishing’s multi-genre RPG Storypath System series. Offering up the best of pulp and B-movie fun, this growing list of standalone games combine the title opening “The Came From…” with “Beyond the Grave” or “Beneath the Sea” to create horror and hilarity. Now OPP is going a new direction with They Came from the Cyclops’s Cave! giving you fantasy adventures while They Came from [CLASSIFIED] let’s your players game at being spies. If you’re looking for fun fantasy or spies that are meant for a good time, this campaign offers two books to select from. If you need supernatural, sea creatures, low-budget fantasy movies, or spies, all with laughs, check out this series.

Milando’s Guide to Magical Marvels (5E) from Eventyr Games

  • END DATE: Thu, March 31 2022 4:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: €15 for the PDF of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? As you’re aware, there are a lot of 5e sourcebooks, many of them offering overlapping/similar content. That’s not a criticism, just a reality, there’s only so much content to explore through the 5e ruleset while keeping it fantasy. When I cover new 5e sourcebooks, I’m looking for something that makes the newest option standout, and Milando’s Guide to Magical Marvels piqued my interest. This sourcebook offers three adjustable adventures with magical themes, twenty plus monsters with dynamic abilities, and rules for unstable spellmarks among its options. The descriptions suggest concepts that take 5e down a less well-trod direction. At 150 pages, I appreciate the work required to combine 5e rules and concepts to create new adventures and options. Check out the campaign page for a downloadable preview to see if their take is right for your gaming table.

VHS: Very Horror Stories from Aces Games

  • END DATE: Thu, March 31 2022 4:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: €130 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of all three games plus dice, a slipcase, poster, and more
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Done as three VHS cassette-sized RPGs, this project offers horror games inspired by 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s movies. Bloodlust covers slasher movies, Overplague presents sci-fi horror, and Unchained goes supernatural. Each VHS has the full ruleset as a 100+ page book, 5 monster sheets, 5 character sheets, and more. The campaign page is covered up with images of what the VHS boxes will look like and they could not look better. If the game is half as good as the presentation, these will be outstanding horror RPGs. If you’re interested, there’s a free preview on the campaign page.

The Chronicles of Aeres: The Doom that Came to Astreas from Dueling Dragon Adventures

  • END DATE: Mon, April 11 2022 9:07 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $30 + $5 S/H in the US for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This book will clock in between 180 and 200 pages of pulp fantasy goodness as you battle back the darkness that looms over the land. Done as an open world and structured campaign, players and GMs can experience the best of both types of gaming experiences. This adventure takes place in Astreas, the same location as their other offering. This is a standalone adventure, but getting the other book helps to develop the world. Inspired by Conan, Elric, Beastmaster, Krull, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, and Zelda II: The Adventures of Link; if those types of properties and 5e interest you, check out the campaign page for more details and links to their Discord and Twitter.

THE EXILES — A dark fantasy RPG from POCKET COMPASS CO.

  • END DATE: Fri, April 1 2022 11:00 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system similar to Forged in the Dark, Powered by the Apocalypse, and Belonging Outside Belonging.
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $49 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of both books
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This a dark fantasy expansion of the Crescent Moon RPG. What makes this interesting is Crescent Moon is an all-ages RPG, while this expansion is dark fantasy, a realm that isn’t as all-ages friendly. I’m curious to see the push-pull they’ll go through to get this to be all-ages. To get from bright and cheery to this, expect more strife, hard choices, and tearful endings. This promises more character options, pointcrawls, and collaborative rules to tailor the setting for the table. Thought, this might be all-ages in the same way Watership Down is all-ages. If you’re interested, there’s a free preview on the campaign page.

Fanged Fables: Vampire Quick-adventures for D&D 5e – $1 from Luna Publishing

  • END DATE: Thu, April 28 2022 11:59 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure module
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $1 for the PDF
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Five 5e mini-adventures that relate to vampires for a buck, does that grab you? Designed for 3rd to 13th level adventurers, this campaign offers the adventures and, if they unlock the stretch goals, vampire-related subclasses. For a buck, there’s a lot of possibilities.

You Ask, I Write from Undiscovered Gems

  • END DATE: Thu, April 7 2022 2:30 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): System neutral
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £20 + £9 S/H in the US for the PDF and print version of the book plus the ability to ask an RPG question
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Want to ask an ENnie Award winning RPG author a question, or request some content, and get to read his answer alongside others? Stephen Hart, full-time RPG author and 2021 ENnie Judges Spotlight for Abracadabra: A Guide to Becoming a Magical Games Master will answer your questions and provide you with a book of those answers and more. It’s a fun opportunity to get an unexpected answer and connect with an RPG creator. If you’re interested, you read more about the project and Stephen on the campaign page.
