The Diablo II: Resurrected launch saw some server issues on launch day that stopped online play and prevented logging into existing characters or creating new ones. Blizzard responded quickly and things should be improved, with spotty issues remaining.

Launch day woes are familiar for anyone that loves to play online games, and this was no different today when Diablo II: Resurrected was released. The game is a reimagining and polished new release of a beloved classic, so the server demand was higher than expected. Considering the launch is supported on multiple platforms as well, the issues were not limited to one corner of the player base.

In order to look into and fix the issue, Blizzard took down local play for several hours, meaning that only offline local play was available for a while. Diablo Executive Producer Rod Fergusson updated on Twitter that, “We’ve had tons of players online, which is great but has been a challenge for servers surpassing our testing”.

The initial downtime estimate was for 30 minutes, but the issue remained ongoing for a few hours. Then, there was an emergency maintenance period announced for 1PM PDT. Around an hour later, Blizzard CS announced the maintenance was over and that the team will continue monitoring any issues. There should now be a fix that unlocks characters.

Launch woes aren’t new, of course, but rapid attention from the Blizzard team seems to have taken care of the most pressing issues, though some players were reporting missing data, rolled back progression, and other issues that still needed attention.

According to Fergusson, “We know many players are still affected, so we’re actively adding capacity and will keep on this until it’s in a better place. This may involve more restarts as well”.

Diablo II: Resurrected does bring a heap of nostalgia along with new features and settings to help bring new players on board. Here’s hoping that all of these issues can be fixed soon.
