Final Fantasy XIV 2023 Fan Festival will happen this July 28-29th in Las Vegas. Square Enix announced the event, the first Fan Festival in person event in a couple of years.
There’s a new teaser website for the event, with a preview of some of what to expect. Tickets will cost $199.99 for the 2-day event, including concerts each night and a swag bag, with contents to be announced.
Since this is the first in-person event in a while, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they are aiming high and trying to create the largest Fan Festival in North America. What this means is they are anticipating a larger number of attendees, and to start things off today they’ve opened an application to get an access code to purchase tickets. If you’re looking to try and buy tickets, you can enter from today through next Saturday, February 25th for a drawing that will give access codes for the player exclusive sale period in early March. There will be a general sale starting on March 15th if there are any tickets left.
One of Final Fantasy XIV’s latest additions, the Far Northern Cosmetics set in the shop, is the subject of a claim by an indigenous group over designs used in the clothing set. According to a letter sent by the Saami Council, they claim that elements in the design of the clothing are cultural property of the Sámi people and they request that Square Enix pull the items from sale.
Saami Council president Áslat Holmberg, in the letter, says that “The Saami Council is of the opinion that the issue is particularly damaging because Sámi clothing traditions are not merely aesthetic; they carry the significance of being specific elements of Sámi identity with meaning, content, and context. By creating this product, Square Enix has allowed their 41 million players to dress up as a Sámi people, clothe themselves in the Sámi identity without our consent, and contribute to the erosion of our culture.”
